Three main characters in Delta Wedding, who each get the chance to narrate the story are, Laura McRaven, Dabney Fairchild, and George Fairchild. Laura, being a young girl who had just lost her mother, isn’t given much respect from her family but plenty of attention. Throughout the story you imagine her just thriving for the treatment she truly wants, that being looked at as not some poor lonely girl. Laura is very close with her many cousins, India at the most, and does not hesitate to fit right in. Dabney, the oldest of the Fairchild children, is less than thrilled about her upcoming wedding. The story is mostly from her point of view which is why I would consider her the main character. Uncle George, who is known as the family “hero,” especially to the main character, stands out from the typical Fairchild family because of his actions and loyalty to anyone, even those whom are lower standard. Dabney persists with wanting Uncle George’s acceptance for the wedding more than anyone else. I think that is a perfect example of why George Fairchild soon becomes a main character/narrator.
The other characters that I would consider significant would only be a handful. India Fairchild, the cousin of Laura and younger sister of the bride, has many rolls acting as the best friend to multiple family members. Uncle Battle regularly makes smart, remorse remarks that the Fairchild children grew up used too. Uncle Battle makes a considerably influential part in the beginning of Delta Wedding, not by his actions but by his observations and annotations. Troy Flavin, Dabney’s fiancé, is likeable; most of the time anyway, by Dabney but her family is still questioning him in numerous ways. The Fairchild family will later on use these negative aspects of Troy to alter Dabney’s decision on marrying the, Delta stranger, much older man. Aunt Primose and Aunt Jim Allen seemed to me to be supportive in a baffling kind of way. There’s a point in the story where the aunts give Dabney a wedding gift to show their affection and “approval” of her wedding. The feeling that Eudora Welty gave off using these two characters in the way she did seems like they incessantly stay there for a moral sustainment, for Dabney. And lastly, knowing how essential Uncle George seems to be to the Fairchild family, Robbie, his ex-wife, is mentioned a number of times, enough to be another character I considered. Even though she has less than any parts in Delta Wedding, the affect she had on Uncle George, making him leave the Delta, made his family absolutely despise her. Robbie’s influence on their marriage is just what has the Fairchild family guessing Dabney and Troy’s sudden wedding. Different factors of these various characters have an overall impact on what goes on and the emotions that run through Delta Wedding’s plot.

    family secret.
My final thoughts on Delta Wedding are content in any way possible. The beginning seemed very tedious but then began to pick up the pace towards the middle. The specific details about the setting helped me a lot with interpreting the feeling of the event that was happening. Also, the multiple points of view that were offered helped when knowing dissimilar sides of the overall story. Dabney wasn’t happy with marrying Troy in a way that came to acceptance by her family. With Uncle George, his ex-wife Robbie was not accepted by the Fairchild family because of that shaming past that would always follow her. I would recommend this book to anyone who would be interested in the difference between to family’s coming together, because of those external conflicts. Delta Wedding portrays the message to be happy, and find that happiness, even if it is abnormal from what is going on around you. “The events in our lives happen in a sequence in time, but in their significance to ourselves they find their own order: the continuous thread of revelation.”- Eudora Welty

Welty’s fiction novel takes place in 1923, with a huge overview of countless details, referring to the settings that show up right in the beginning. Welty wrote Delta Wedding during the era of the Great Depression but the only influential factor that shines throughout is the roles of different classed people and different races. Laura McRaven is the very first character the reader is introduced too. Laura, hopeless in the eyes of others, is just a lonely orphan girl who has come two visit relative in Fairchilds, Mississippi for a family wedding. Dabney has a wedding, which her family seems to not agree of, approaching weeks away and throughout the preparations a secret seems to linger. Lastly, the secret began to unravel. With the skipping back and forth between narrators, the book seemed to have a slower pace but then again, in that stretched of time, Welty displays her theme fantastically. Delta Wedding had me waiting until the end to tie all the previous information together, and finally revealed the deep family secret.

In my reading of Delta Wedding, my thoughts shifted tremendously. Eudora Welty, the author that wrote the 326 page book, Delta Wedding, in 1923, but did not publish it until 1946. Welty ties in many aspects that were happening around her in the 20s into her novel along with a discrete continuation of the Delta setting. Laura McRaven, a young girl that just lost her mother, starts the story off from her point of view. The outlooks quickly change going from Laura to Dabney Fairchild, Laura’s cousin and soon bride to be, and then to George Fairchild, Dabney’s uncle. Delta Wedding appealed to be because of the wedding aspect but also the front cover showed that it would have been taken place in older times, on a beautiful plantation. Delta wedding in just one of the author’s seventeen books that have been published. Eudora Welty (1909-2001) is said to be one of the most important American writers of the twentieth century. Many of her novels, novellas, and essays have been awarded winner of the National Book Award and Pultizer Prize, along with other literary awards.
